IN FINLAND William returns to Finland in early 1930's only to bring his family to Canada. When his wife Aino refuses to leave Finland William also stays. He never goes back to Canada. There is no more talk about North America or travelling there. It may not be all that easy to adjust to life in Finland again but at least William is together with his family. He settles down for his old-new life. Soon after his first born son becomes sick with polio and later dies before reaching adulthood. The family grows by four girls who adore their father. Work in nickel mines is not only dangerous but can also cause various health problems to workers. Young William leaves for Canada with thick hair and returns almost bald some five, six years later. William dies of an unexplainable cancer in his late 50's. Aino and the daughters are left behind. After that nobody knows even less about his Canadian years. |
Project William is dedicated to William's daughter, my mother Laina Metsähuone 1939 - 2015
